The adidas archives are filled with hundreds of different trainers from the ’70s and ’80s with unique purposes. The strangest of these might be the Tischtennis, a ping-pong shoe that is back for a retro release in 2024.

adidas has created a lot of purpose-built shoes over their seventy-five year history. This year, they have revived one of their oddest creations, the Tischtennis from the 1970s. The shoe is a relic from the era of “ping-pong diplomacy”, through which the sport opened up relations between the United States and China after decades of fear of communism by the USA. The Tischtennis is not only unique in purpose, but in its look as well. The silhouette sits on top of an arched midsole, and features a loose-knit mesh upper with minimal suede overlays to old it together. The model is back in a simple white, green, and grey color scheme, with a gum sole for its initial return this year.
