The Best Dressed at the 2024 Governors Awards

After all the hoopla of the Golden Globes on Sunday, this year’s awards season is coming in fast and furious. Just days after, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences held its 2024 Governors Awards — and plenty of boldfaced names showed.

While the awards have been around since 2009, they have begun to gain more traction over the past few years as the Academy has ramped up its lead-up events to the big show: the Oscars (which will take place this year on Sunday, March 10).

Tuesday night’s appearances confirmed some of the key trends that cropped up at the Golden Globes: red, all-black suiting and sumptuous black velvet.

The last of which appeared on Olivia Rodrigo, who wore a vintage Saint Laurent gown from The Reallist. The gowns silk bodice and train came with velvet twist bustline, and the material contrast felt quietly elevated.

Margot Robbie also wore black velvet, with a Celine gown that featured numerous cutouts and a V-shaped crystal embroidery. The actress paired the look with Fred Leighton diamonds and heels by Manolo Blahnik (a clear favorite for the “Barbie” star, though you couldn’t see them with the dress hemline).

Rosamund Pike continues to showcase her penchant for fabulous style with a signature quirk. After her vintage Dior tea-length gown with Philip Treacy veil at the Golden Globes, the “Saltburn” actress chose an Erdem rose gown with a sweetheart neckline from the designer’s pre-fall ’24 collection. The look not only tapped into the red dress trend, it also hinted at spring ’24’s rosette trend that’s coming on the heels of all those holiday bows everywhere.

Pike’s “Saltburn” co-star wore one of the most surprising looks of the night: a tuxedo that happened to be from Stella McCartney’s spring ’24 women’s collection. It’s a great addition to the genderless fashion conversation. Women wearing a men’s look is nothing now, but to see more of something borrowed from the girls is delightful.
