Cynthia Erivo is keeping up the method dressing trend for her “Wicked” press tour. The star went green for an appearance onstage at Caesars Palace during the 2024 CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday, channeling her character in the upcoming movie, Elphaba.
Though method dressing has been a long-time styling tactic of Hollywood, it’s drawn new eyes and attention following the “Barbie” press tour. Notably, the “Godzilla” team wore claw-bedecked shoes on the Oscar’s red carpet. Also Zendaya, who has been method dressing for the majority of her career, has been wearing almost exclusively white pumps in a nod to tennis whites for the press tour of her upcoming film “Challengers” — for one look, her custom shoes included actual tennis balls on the heel.
At CinemaCon, Erivo and co-star Ariana Grande premiered an extended featurette of the film.
About the shoe
Longtime collaborator Jason Bolden styled Erivo in an over-the-knee boot made of satin. In keeping with the sock boot trend, the shoe clung tightly to the actor’s leg.
The green was likely a nod to Erivo’s character, which boasts green skin. The shoe featured a block heel and a platform for additional height without increasing the pitch. The silhouette also has a seam going up the front center.
The Sock Boot, Stocking Boot or Second-Skin Boot
Though they are called different things, boots that feature a skin-tight body are nothing new. The 1990 movie “Pretty Woman” notably included tight thigh-high boots. Those would go on to influence Stuart Weitzman to create his massively popular Highland and Lowland styles — the Highland was introduced in 2013. In high fashion, Raf Simons was working with similar styles at Christian Dior in 2015 and they have remained an industry staple since.
This year, designers like Gucci, Dior, Acne Studios and Chanel offered their versions of second-skin boots during fashion weeks in Paris and Milan.
