Shrek’s inexplicable chokehold on Gen Z is about to entangle its feet, too.
Crocs is official collaborating with the franchise to bring an eerily realistic Shrek Classic Clog to life. The ubiquitous silhouette takes on the ogre’s skin tone, blemishes and all, and see Shrek’s nose and ears transformed into Jibbitz. Even without eyes, looking down on these on-feet will feel like two Shreks are staring right back at you. Completing the look is a fleece-shrouded strap representing Shrek’s vest and hosting the franchise’s “S” logo where Crocs mark would usually appear.
The Shrek Trend
The first Shrek movie came out more than 20 years ago now, before many Zoomers were born, but that hasn’t stopped it from enduring and taking on a new life of sorts. Countless think pieces have tackled the, “Why is Shrek everywhere?” question in recent years, and the answer is always some sort of combination of irony, memes, and a sincere embrace of the film’s sense of humor.
A decade ago, the (quite vulgar) “Shrek is love, Shrek is life” meme was born and took hold of very-online millennials when memes weren’t as mainstream as they are today. And now, there’s a nontrivial chance your favorite TikToker has posted a video with an augmented reality Shrek wrapping his arm around their shoulder. It isn’t that Shrek is uniquely popular amongst Gen Z — it’s just surprising that the Michael Meyers-voiced character and the corresponding universe have been adopted by another cohort after all this time.
An official Shrek Rave is touring this year for the second in a row, while menswear boutique Mr. Porter called Shrek the “menswear trend of the 2020s.”
Release Details
The Shrek x Crocs Classic Clog will release at 12 p.m. EST Sept. 12 through Crocs’ website for $60 with a raffle for adult’s sizes accepting entries for 24 hours. Kids’ and toddlers’ sizes can be purchased directly for $50 and $45, respectively. To coincide with the release, Crocs has also made new Jibbitz available with the faces of Shrek himself, Princess Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and Dragon for $5 each.
A recent restock of the Cars x Crocs Classic Clog brought its share of fanfare, but that may be nothing compared to what’s in store for Crocs and its long-enduring fanbase.
