Celine history

One of the most recognizable names in fashion today, the House of Celine was founded by Céline Vipiana in 1945. While it started as a made-to-measure children’s store, the brand saw a shift in 1960 when it released its first offering for women. Celine would go on to launch its first women’s shoe line three years later. Bernard Arnault would eventually acquire the brand in 1987 and it would become a part of Arnault’s luxury conglomerate LVMH in a deal worth about $540 million.

Following the death of Céline Vipiana in 1997, Michael Kors would take over. However, the French luxury brand wouldn’t really take off until the appointment of English fashion designer Phoebe Philo in 2008. Philo was known for creating elegant minimalist designs that paid homage to the brand’s roots. Following a successful decade at the helm, Philo would exit and Hedi Slimane of Dior Homme and Saint Laurent would take over.
