Nike‘s footwear return policy has grown into a viral digital moment, thanks to TikTok.

In Oct. 2021, a now-viral TikTok video found user Josh Rincon portraying employee and customer characters to explain his interpretation of Nike’s return policy. According to Rincon’s video, the social media user claims the athletic brand can accept shoe returns over 30 days if the footwear is flawed by checking the manufacturing date. The clip has been viewed over 20 million times since its initial publication.

Currently, Nike’s return policy does allow customers to exchange shoes for a new pair within two years. However, these do come with specifications. According to the brand’s policy on its website, Nike shoes or apparel can be returned within two years of the manufacture date if they develop flaws in their workmanship or materials. Full refunds on these types of items are granted within 60 days of their original purchase date, and must be returned to stores or online, respectively, if they were purchased from a Nike store or its website.

However, if it’s been longer than 60 days and under two years since the flawed item’s manufacture date, Nike must be contacted to make a return from a website or app order, or online orders placed at a Nike store. Items purchased in-store must be returned to the store they were originally purchased from — though, if you can’t return your items to the store in-person, you must contact the store to learn more about your options.

For flawed shoe returns to non-Nike stores that carry Nike products, the pair must be returned to the store they were purchased from. Shoppers can file claims with Nike if they are unable to return their footwear to its original place of purchase, or if the retailer has referred them to Nike.

As with all return policies, there are exceptions to the rules. Items that are specified as being nonreturnable, as well as gift cards and any Nike Clearance store items, cannot be returned or refunded under any circumstances. Nike Sport Bands and Sport Loops also have a shorter return window, as they’re only eligible for returns within 14 days of purchase as long as a receipt is included.

Specific Nike products with unique written guarantees or warranties will have their return information included on their labels, hang tags or warranty cards, as well.
