The Sharpest Loafer Moments of 2023, From Penny Straps to Studded Slip-Ons

Loafers earned their place as a top shoe in 2023 — and led to a variety of dapper style moments on the red carpet.

Throughout the year, stars slipped on loafers to dress up outfits for a variety of fashionable moments. Glen Powell, Andrew Scott and Emma Chamberlain, among others, gravitated towards classic leather styles in neutral tones for premieres, fashion shows and more. The trend was also reflected in retail, with a 55.9% increase in men’s and women’s styles leading to 11,481 varieties on the market, according to retail analysis platform Trendalytics.

Still, stars like Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively and Andrew Garfield embraced revised loafers with monochrome colorways, metal accents and heeled bases, proving the shoe’s ability to adapt to a range of tastes for any occasion. Below, take a glimpse at stars’ sharpest loafer moments of the year.

Kristen Stewart, Met Gala 2023

Kristen Stewart brought a rebellious take to red carpet dressing at the 2023 Met Gala, arriving in a pair of white and black Chanel loafers. The “Twilight” star’s narrow-toed style was worn with a similarly color-blocked Chanel suit, complete with wide-legged pants and a sheer blouse topped with a knotted tie.

During Paris Fashion Week, Andrew Garfield brought a burst of color to Valentino’s front row with a pair of deep red leather loafers. The “Amazing Spider-Man” star’s pair was complete with monochrome pyramid studs along its sides, bringing a punky flair to his romantic outfit for the occasion: a pink flower-accented coat, orange shirt and tan trousers, styled by Warren Alfie Baker.
