Exclusive: Studmuffin’s Kyle Brincefield Shares The Story Behind The Spike-Covered Heels on ‘American Horror Story: Delicate’

American Horror Story: Delicate” is here — and bringing a dramatic customized take to Gianvito Rossi‘s signature heels onscreen, courtesy of New York-based brand Studmuffin NYC.

“With this kind of application, since the shoe’s already made, you can’t get into all the crevices to apply them how I normally would,” Studmuffin designer Kyle Brincefield, commissioned by costume designer Jacqueline Demetrio to embellish the Rossi pumps in April, exclusively told FN. “It took maybe a good two to three hours.”

On Wednesday, the horror anthology series’ most recent premiere — the first of season 12, which is inspired by Danielle Valentine’s novel “Delicate Condition” and will be divided into two parts — debuted, featuring a starry cast including Emma Roberts, Kim Kardashian and Cara Delevingne. Within its first episode, the Rossi’s also formed a dynamic shoe moment to kick off the series, worn by artist Sonia (Annabelle Dexter-Jones) while eavesdropping on actress Anna Victoria Alcott (Roberts). The pair certainly makes a bold statement, featuring custom metallic green uppers that Brincefield applied numerous silver spikes to with industrial-grade E-6000 adhesive.

The designer was positively surprised when seeing the shoes onscreen, as he didn’t know they were used until he watched the episode — as documented on Instagram.

“I especially didn’t think that they would be in the first episode, but it was just amazing,” Brincefield told FN. “When it actually happens, and it actually comes to fruition, it’s just the most exciting feeling in the world.”

The edgy embellishments are a signature of Brincefield’s brand, allowing the designer to literally leave a mark on this season’s “AHS” costume range. The moment marked Rossi’s latest shoe spotting on television, following appearances in seasons of NBC’s “The Good Place” and Netflix’s “Emily in Paris.”

What future episodes of “AHS: Delicate” will hold — including their shoes — remains to be seen. However, viewers can tune in when new episodes are released on FX each Wednesday night at 10 p.m. EST, available to stream on Hulu the following day.
