Asics Joins Fitness App Movement with Acquisition of Runkeeper Running App

Gyms may slowly be a thing of the past as fitness apps are allowing consumers to work out in their own time and at their own pace, without often-costly membership fees.

Asics has just announced its acquisition of Runkeeper, a popular running app based in Boston. “Partnering with Asics to fulfill this vision together makes a ton of sense,” said Runkeeper founder Jason Jacobs. “There is a strong alignment between our brands and core values. And from people using our Shoe Tracker feature in the app, we know that Asics shoes are by far the ones that Runkeeper users run in the most.”

The app includes such features as Audio Cues that let runners know their pace, time and distance, while a Workout Comparison compares how runs stack up to each other. To make even the most grueling run more enjoyable, there’s a Spotify Connect allowing runners to play their favorite song list.

Just last year, Under Armour launched UA Record, which allows consumers to track their fitness activity, connect with the fitness community and keep goals on target.

Sports Authority is also getting techy with the launch of a free personal-training app called BodyFit, giving customers access to more than 100 at-home fitness training videos.
