The Nike Air Trainer 1 is back. The iconic multi-sport training shoe is gearing up to celebrate its thirty-fifth anniversary in 2022, and if we know Nike, they have big plans for the beloved model. First, check out the new “Coriander” look, coming soon.

Nike’s Air Trainer 1 was revolutionary when first introduced in 1987. Previously, athletic footwear was designed and built for one sport at a time, leaving multi-disciplined athletes swapping sneakers from one activity to the next. Then, Tinker Hatfield saw the solution to the problem, and the Air Trainer 1 was born. Featuring a higher-cut upper than most athletic shoes and a forefoot strap to lock your feet in, the Air Trainer 1 packed all the performance features needed for gym workouts, tennis, field work, and even basketball, thanks to the encapsulated Air unit in the midsole. The Trainer 1 quickly transcended sports, becoming the footwear icon we recognize it as today.

Now, the Air Trainer 1’s thirty-fifth anniversary is just around the corner. While we’ve already had an early look at the (now delayed) Cactus Jack iteration of the beloved trainer, Nike has begun to unveil some of their new anniversary-edition releases for the new year. First up is the modified “Coriander” colorway, which switched up some materials and layering on the Air Trainer 1, as well as adding some new additions to the design. Comparable to a modern hiking shoe, this Air Trainer features a ripstop underlay at the midfoot, new 3M overlays across the shoe’s outermost leather panels, and a revised strap that swaps velcro for an full buckle, as well as a number of other small detail changes.
